The Trucking Evolution- What happened to the American Trucker?

    in Current Events

It’s not an easy task exploring the reasons for the decline of truckings’ "American Dream" for OTR drivers, company drivers and owner operators. We can make a list of everything wrong with trucking and how it affects truckers, but to pinpoint the problems in order to resolve them is much more difficult. It is a highly intricate and complicated web of obstacles, involving rules and regulations interwoven with industry practices, systems and schemes.
Although most of us weren’t a part of trucking prior to deregulation, most will agree that trucking and truck drivers played a major part of the American Dream during that time. Deregulation is not the sole reason for the decline of the American Dream, it has however, caused trucking to evolve into an industry of "them against us" but in order to fix something, we need to understand it.
We have the honor to have with us Steve Viscelli, sociologist and long time researcher of  truck drivers and the trucking industry. His pursuit to find out why truckers work so hard and how long-haul trucking went from being one of the best, to one of the toughest blue-collar jobs in the U.S. led him to obtain his CDL and continue his research from behind the wheel. His research, along with his time Over the Road, resulted in his book, “The Big Rig - Trucking and the Decline of the American Dream”
Also with us will be our long time friend and fellow advocate Desiree Wood of Real Women In Trucking who will be sharing her present real-time experiences for those who may not be aware of what is currently happening within her organization.

On March 28, 2018, the Ron and Don  Show's broadcast: "Did a Minnesota construction firm build sub-standard Housing in Haiti?" interviewed Jack Johnston from Washington, DC about his story on he wrote about sub-standard housing being buildt in Haiti...some of the speculation was that THOR Construction might be in trouble. (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/theronanddonshow/2018/03/29/did-a-minnesota-construction-firm-build-sub-standard-housing-in-haiti?fbclid=IwAR0WG6znUKeySbqKLP-r5KXAPxYysjVCMcm8_o5twseIblAtTxbvi4bFGvI)
    2. The Star Tribune published a story citing:
"Thor Companies, the Minneapolis-based construction firm and the state’s largest minority-owned company, has run into financial trouble, only months after it celebrated its move into a new North Side headquarters partially funded by Hennepin County. Target Corp., which long has used Thor on store projects and holds a lease on Thor’s office space, has provided millions in assistance to pay subcontractors of Thor and forgiven nearly $300,000 in unpaid rent. On Tuesday, Hennepin County commissioners learned that liens had been placed on a building where Thor is set to transfer parking spaces to the county. Thor’s problems came to light in recent days after St. Paul-based Sunrise Bank, a Thor lender, moved to collect an overdue loan against the company in Ramsey County."
1/18/ 2019, the Star Tribune publish: "Thor Cos. sued by Sunrise Banks for $3 million; receiver sought," citing: "Thor does not have “sufficient liquidity to continue to operate,” and multiple creditors might attempt a “free-for-all” liquidation of the business." Why the lies?" Phone lines will be open at 9:30AM.

Getting Naked and Painted to Fight Divisiveness

    in News

NYC-based artist and body painter Andy Golub will be bodypainting over 100 nude models in NYC’s Times Square on June 15th as part of an event called the Protest Against Divisiveness. Each model will be painted with their own message promoting unity and will then lead the assembled crowd down Broadway to join a song circle led by American Roots artist, Guy Davis, at the Flatiron Building. Other notable guests include civil rights attorney Ronald Kuby.
Tonight we talk to Andy... the how, why and nakedness of this huge event and the statement it will be making.
Golub has been organizing large scale body painting events around the world, including NYC Bodypainting Day, since 2014. Each year has a different purpose and theme, but all are transient expressions of living art.  The event is put on by the Human Connection Arts, Andy's non-profit organization that spreads artistic freedom and builds communities of individuals. Its mission is to share who we are as human beings, to build a community accepting of ourselves and each other. Body Painting is the vehicle we use to strip away the labels that prevent us from connection, accepting and loving each other.

    in Current Events

On November 3, 2005, Teresa Halbach, a 25-year old photographer from Calumet County, Wisconsin was reported missing by her mother.  The last time anyone saw or heard from her was on Monday, October 31.  Her last appointment on that date was booked by Steven Avery, who used the name “B. Janda” to photograph a van located at Avery Auto Salvage in Manitowoc County.  On  November 5, Teresa’s Toyota RAV-4 was found hidden on the Avery property by civilians who were searching the salvage yard with permission from Earl Avery.  A .22 rifle was seized from Avery’s trailer on November 6 and a burned Motorola cell phone and burned Canon camera were found in a burn barrel near Avery’s trailer on November 7.  On November 8, 2005, a Toyota key was found in the bedroom of Avery’s trailer.  The license plate for Teresa’s vehicle was found later inside a car on the Avery property.  In February, 2006, an Avery cousin reported that 16-year old Brendan Dassey had been acting out, crying a lot and losing weight.  During questioning on March 1, 2006, Dassey admitted to his involvement in Teresa’s murder and provided information that led to the discovery of a .22 bullet with Teresa’s DNA in Avery’s garage and Avery’s epithelial DNA on the hood latch of Teresa’s vehicle.  Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on December 18, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. Central for an interview with Kenneth Kratz, the former Calumet County prosecutor who tried Avery and Dassey and the author of Avery: The Case Against Steven Avery and What “Making a Murderer” Gets Wrong.   We’ll discuss the evidence linking Avery and Dassey to the murder of Teresa Halbach and the backlash from the Netflix documentary Making a Murderer.  We’re a live show and calls are welcome.  Our phone number is (347) 989-1171.
